Ration Pack Initiative (RPI)

The Ration Pack Initiative (RPI), led by the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association in collaboration with academic and government partners, is a strategic project aimed at strengthening national resilience and advancing sustainable manufacturing in Barbados.

The initiative focuses on the development of Meals-Ready-to-Eat (MREs), or Ration Packs, which are compact, nutritionally balanced, ready-to-consume meals designed for use during emergencies such as natural disasters, pandemics, and other disruptions to food supply systems. With long shelf lives and minimal preparation requirements, these meals are ideal for disaster response, humanitarian relief, and security applications. The Ration Packs are currently available in three flavors: Chicken and potato, Beef and potato, and Channa and potato, offering both protein and vegetarian options.

Developed in response to global supply chain disruptions and increasing climate risks faced by Small Island Developing States, the RPI supports food security, reduces import dependence, and creates new opportunities for local manufacturing and economic growth.
